Delhi Metro Extension Work to Meerut, Panipat & Alwar to Begin Soon

Delhi Metro network is set to be extended to the nearby towns including Sonepat and Panipat in Haryana, Alwar in Rajasthan and Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. This will be a major relief for people commuting in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The urban development ministry (MoUD) has decided to lay three corridors as following

Corridor Route Length
Delhi – Sonepat – Panipat 111 km
Delhi – Gurgaon – Alwar 180 km
Delhi – Ghaziabad – Meerut 90 km

The total cost of the metro extension is expected to reach Rs. 72,170 Crore.

During a CII conference on Friday, Mr. Chittaranjan Kumar Khaitan, joint secretary of Ministry of Urban development said “The detailed project reports have been completed and construction is likely to start soon and the process of implementation will be undertaken in consultation with state governments”.

Metro network in the last five years has already been extended to the NCR region in the cities including Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad and the construction work is in progress in Faridabad which is expected to be completed by the end of year 2014.

Recently the 21 kilometer metro rail project in Greater Noida from zero point of Yamuna Expressway on Noida-Greater Noida expressway was also approved by the Yamuna Expressway Authority.

According to the NCR Planning board sources, these upcoming metro projects will not only reduce road congestion and accidents but also offer smooth transportation.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will be involved in these projects as consultants and project developer and the ministry is expecting to complete the projects in the minimum possible time.

In a bid to implement these Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) projects for the NCR, the ministry constituted the National Capital Region Transport Corporation Limited (NCRTC) recently.

“The RRTS will play an important role in redefining the urban mass transportation in India. Eight RRTS corridors have been recommended under this system and three have been prioritized,” said Khaitan.

  1. God knows when will this area i.e.kundli, sonepat, will see progress. Despite of so many announcements by the centre and haryana govt. this is the most neglected areas of Haryana. Only progress sees in gurgaon and gurgaon not in Sonepat. There is no rapid rail transit system work in progress nor any metro or easy connectivity to encourage people to live there. In the centre and State,BJP governments are ruling, so they should do as early as possible which see the light of progress.

    • Indeed very true. Kundli-Sonepat-Panipat area is the most neglected part of NCR.The Haryans Govt should take pains and get Metro and Rapid Rail projects to begin without further delay. The people are waiting eagerly for such projects to start.

  2. I truly agree with Mr. Kumar & Mr. Garg. The only solution to daily massive traffic jams in Delhi is K.M.P.Expressway.
