Gujarat Housing Board (GHB) again taking a step for the development of affordable housing scheme in the Muslim-dominated area at Morarji Chowk in old Bapunagar. The piece of land is open and the residents of the area used it as a playground and venue for social and religious functions since 1950s.
The residents of protested the GHB move of converting land into a housing project and the government of playing mischief.
On the other hand, Gujarat Housing Board said that, the categorization of the land as playground was a mistake which has been corrected. This was the second attempt of board, when the GHB to use the land for housing purpose.
Against this step, the residents of the area moved to the Gujarat High Court where the board clearly declared that board was not coming up with any construction on the plot, and the petition was disposed of.
Recently, when the GHB started construction on the plot, despite a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the scheme pending in High Court, the residents protested the move. Dozens of policemen from Rakhial police station were deployed there.
