Nagarothana Affordable Housing Scheme by Karnataka Govt

The state government of Karnataka finally planned to implement Nagarothana scheme in the city. According to the source, the cabinet has approved Rs. 7,300 crore for project for year 2016-17 and 2017-18.

Under Nagarothana scheme, the government will bring the offers, incentives and concessions for builder to take participate in the construction of affordable housing projects for EWS (Economical Weaker Section and LIG (Lower Income Group) of the society. The initiative is towards the fulfillment of Centre’s dream of providing housing for all by 2022.

The project will include all major development including, massive road infrastructure development, construction of underground drainages, storm water drains and development of footpaths.

This move of the government has come amidst severe criticism from all sections of the society over appalling infrastructure, poor traffic and a worsening solid waste management scenario and is perceived by many as the last minute attempt to woo citizens.

The government was also pressurized by various heads of industry whom are part of vision group set up by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently. Some investors too had taken a dig at the government at the Invest Karnataka Global Summit.

In his 2016-17 budget, Siddaramaiah had allocated a whopping Rs 10,000 crore for BBMP against Rs 4,770 crore last year. The package includes Nagarothana plan, special investment plan and assistance by finance commission and other grants from the Centre.
