Latest Housing News, Schemes & Projects | By Rajkumar

This the time when the prices of real estate market in Mumbai are at the sky level and due to the reason the buyers as well as the builders are turning their ways to the affordable homes in the suburban area like Thane, Navi Mumbai or Kalyan-Dombivl. In this situation, the development body of Maharashtra, MHADA seems to be ignoring the need of affordable housing in these growing area.

Mumbai continues to be the favorite area of MHADA for the launch of housing projects. According to the information, the authority has plans to construct 2,355 tenements for different segments during 2016-2017. The information reveals that the affordable housing projects in Mumbai would cost around 1,000 crore.

On the other side, the MHADA plans to construct only 552 housing units for the entire Konkan region, from Thane to Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg, during 2016-17.

According to the statement of an official, it is a very ironic that MHADA should give preference to Mumbai when the population shift is towards the suburban towns. Policy planners in Mantralaya have been constantly arguing for greater concentration in suburban pockets else it would turn into an endless sprawl with punishing commute.
However, its own agency tasked with building affordable housing is overlooking the needs of the suburban home buyers.

In the last year lottery, around 5,399 tenements were constructed in the Konkan region, with a bulk of the homes concentrated in Thane-Kalyan belt.

The source said that the need of the hour is to invest in infrastructure and housing in suburban towns as the core city area is out of bounds due to the high prices. However, instead of reducing the burden on Mumbai, MHADA is over burdening the social and civic infrastructure by adding more tenements in Mumbai.
