The order of the state Public Works Department on 28 January, 2013 to stop work on the Chennai Port – Maduravoyal elevated corridor project has been set aside by the Madras High Court. The cost has ordered the commencement of the stalled 19 km project.

The project was stalled last year by the PWD seeking realigning of the expressway owing that the project has encroached the River Cooum in some parts.

The decision was taken by the division bench comprising of Justices N Paul Vasanthakumar and P Devadoss. The bench has also rejected the order passed by the PWD chief engineer on 29 March, 2012 to stop the work on the elevated corridor.

The State Government and all contesting respondents has also been directed by the bench to extend full co-operation for speedy completion of the project. While the project has already been started after getting coastal regulation zone clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The bench said that the decision has been taken in the public interest after studying the feasibility report at the instance of Government of India, Ministry of Shipping, NHAI and Tamil Nadu Government.

The project is being developed to reduce or free the movement of the cargo traffic and vehicle to Chennai port from within the city. This will ultimately reduce the congestion of the traffic in the city.

At present, vehicles have to travel through NH-45, NH-4 and NH-5 to reach the Chennai Port. And with traffic restrictions, container trucks and cargo carriers are not allowed to enter into the city during day time, up to 8 p.m. Hence considering the necessity of reaching the port easily, in quick time a reducing the congestion in the city, the corridor was being constructed.

Every day, approximately 11,901 vehicles enter and exit the Chennai port through 4 gates while 5,398 trucks pass only through Gate No.1.

Other than this corridor project, there are some more future plans for the betterment of Port of Chennai such as Master plan for port railway, realigning rail and road network, development of Ro-Ro terminal and a multi-level car parking facility with a capacity of up to 5000 cars and Chennai mega container terminal with a continuous quay length of 2 km with 18-22m side along draft which is capable of handling ultra large container ships carrying over 15000 TEU’s.
