Urban Housing Mission to be Launched in Kerala by CM Oommen Chandy

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna: On Tuesday, the Chief Minister of Kerala will the scheme in the state to provide houses for all. It will be an initiative step towards housing for all scheme which is launched by the Central government with the aim to construct 2 crore houses across the nation by the year 2022. It is the Urban Housing Mission for which a division of Local Self Government Department is spearheading the initiative in Kerala.

The scheme will be implemented through public private partnership and interest subsidy which are the component of the scheme.

Binu Francis, the director of Urban Housing Mission said that in the first phase of implementation six corporations and nine municipalities will be included in the scheme. In his statement he also mentioned the corporations and municipalities and they are Thiruvanathapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur corporations and Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thodupuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kalpetta, and Kasargode municipalities.

The scheme is mainly targeted for specific group such as woman, economical weaker section, urban poor and people belonging to scheduled caste and scheduled tribe communities.

The source said in his statement that the government will provide `1 to `3 lakh assistance per house under different components of the scheme, including in-situ redevelopment of slums using land as resource, credit-linked subsidy scheme, affordable housing in partnership and beneficiary-led individual construction or improvement of homes.

The government will provide an interest subsidy of 6.5 per cent on the housing loans under the scheme. Urban Affairs Minister Manjalamkuzhi Ali will preside over the function at Hotel SP Grand Days. Health Minister V S Sivakumar, will be the chief guest. Other dignitaries will also attend.
