PM Awas Yojana Urban: 2,508 Cities Selected for Affordable Housing

In 26 States, 2,508 cities have been selected under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. According to the information, the urban poor of 2,508 cities will get affordable housing under ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana’.

During the question hour in the Lok Sabha, the Urban Development Minister M Venkaiah Naidu said that, a total of 2,508 cities of 26 states have been identified as selected for Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Housing for all (Urban) Mission.

Meanwhile he told about the guidelines of the PMAY-(U) and said that, the houses under the mission should be designed and constructed to meet the requirement of structural safety against earthquakes, flood, cyclone, landslide etc. conforming to the National Building Code and other relevant Bureau of Indian Standards Codes.

Under the PMAY (U), the technologies will also be used to facilitate state technologies for adoption of layout designs and building plans suitable for various geo-climatic zones and to deploy disaster resistant and environment friendly technologies.

The scheme was launched in 2015 with a target to construct more than two crore houses across the nation by 2022.

The scheme came in the existence especially for poor and people who are living under EWS and LIG categories in urban areas of the country.

During the question hours, he replied to a question and said that, it is the primary responsibility of the state governments to provide shelter for the urban homeless people.

According to the source, the Ministry of and Urban Poverty Alleviation is implementing a dedicated scheme named as ‘Shelter for Urban Homeless’ for providing permanent shelter to urban poor with basic facilities. The scheme is a component of Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihoods Mission.

Total of 770 shelters have been sanctioned by states and UTs with a capacity of about 38,770 inmates. Out of this, 270 shelters with a total capacity of about 11,900 inmates are operational, source said.
