MHADA Shortlisted 16 Developers for Dharavi Redevelopment Project to Build 1.08 Lakh Houses

MHADA has shortlisted 16 Developers for redeveloping Dharavi Area. These developers will redevelop the 240 hectare of Dharavi in the pre-bidding stage.

According to the source, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority has aimed to construct around 1.08 lakh houses of which 50% will be in under affordable scheme. The project will rehabilitate around 58,000 people and is expected to be completed in seven year and.

“We are having a series of meetings with citizens and government officials. We will try to accommodate the residents there only so that their social, cultural and learning fabric will not be disturbed”, Housing minister Prakash Mehta said.

The Chief Officer of the project told the media that we will now check the financial capability of the 16 developers before allowing them in the bidding process. And further he added that the actual process of bidding will start after the pre-bid.

The state government of Maharashtra has decided to provide a FSI (Floor Area Index) of 4 and the size of flats meant for rehabilitation will be 350 square feet each.

According to the statement of senior government officials, the area have five sector and fifth one is developed by MHADA itself. Out of 1.08 lakh houses, 40,000 flats would be sell in the open market by four developers and remaining 68,000 houses will be used to rehabilitate the 55,000 peoples. The rest will be up for sale in the open market under the affordable housing segment.

Although the Congress-NCP had invited bids in 2007 and 14 developers evinced interest, all of them backed out later alleging that the bidding process was faulty.

One section of Dharavi residents, however, are not happy with the government over the project. “Our houses are much bigger than slums. So we should not be bracketed under the Slum Act. We should be either given bigger houses of 750 sq ft or excluded from the project,” the residents had written to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis recently.
