Under the MoU, the UP government agreed to provide the required land and the logistic support for the development of airports. The step has been taken ahead of LokSabha elections to preventing it to delayed further.

The Uttar Pradesh government has already handed over the airports at Meerut, Moradabad and Faizabad to the Airport Authority of India. All the 7 airports will be developed by the AAI only.

The development of airport in Meerut may face some difficulties because as per the current rules an airport can not be developed within a distance of 150 Kilometers of existing airport. Since there is already an airport in Delhi and Meerut is just about 80-85 kilometers away from Delhi. The proposal for an airport in Meerut may require the nod of the Union Cabinet before the authority start any development work on it.
