15 Cities of Kerala Included in PM Awas Yojna

Kerala: On Tuesday, 15 Cities has been included in the program to provide houses for homeless in seven years under PM Awas Yojna (PMAY).

The meeting was organized in this respect in which urban local bodies have been directed to hold special council meetings to work out schemes for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) to provide houses for all by 2022.

According to the source, the first phase of the scheme would be covered by the cities including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thodupuzha, Ernakulam, Thrikkakara, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kalpetta and Kasaragod of Kerala. The housing units in these cities would be construction under public-private participation and credit-linked subsidy components of PMAY.

The slums included in these cities would be developed by private developers using the vacant land under public-private participation. Central and State governments, urban local governments, institutions and individuals would be selected for implementing the project.

Source said in his statement that the private investor for slum development would be selected through open bidding. A slum development grant of Rs.1 lakh each would be given for constructing houses in slums.

Lower Income Group will get a home loan up to Rs. 6 lakh at affordable interest rates for purchasing home under the scheme. And the Load subsidy would be provide for 15 years.

The government would also provide houses at affordable rates with the help of private agencies. The government has asked urban local governments to prepare the list of the homeless within their ambit.

Urban Housing Mission is the State-level nodal agency of the project. The project has been sanctioned for district headquarters and also for towns which have more than 1 lakh population.
