This is the first time in the history that Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas is implementing such a huge scheme for the uplifting of women belonging to BPL households in India.

Objective of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is to empower women and protect their health from health hazards caused by the use of unclean fossil fuels for cooking. The scheme is also expected to help lower the indoor as well as outdoor pollution. Reduction in indoor pollution will ensure protection of children from serious health diseases such as lung cancer etc.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the central government has earmarked Rs. 8000 crore for the distribution of LPG connections. The government has set a target of providing LPG connections to 5 Crore BPL households across the country. Scheme will be implemented in three years from 2016-17 to 2018-19. In 2016-17 alone, the government aims to provide LPG connections to 1.5 Crore BPL households with a budgetary provision of Rs. 2000 Crore.

A financial assistance of Rs. 1600/- to each household will be given to buy new LPG connection. The LPG connection under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will be given in the name of the women person of the BPL household. Government will also provide EMI facility to buy stove and refill under the scheme.

Funding of the scheme will came from the money saved by people giving up LPG subsidy voluntarily under the Give-it-Up campaign launched in January 2015. The government has already saved thousands of Crores as about 1.13 Crore people have already given up subsidy under the campaign.

PM Ujjwala Yojana can prove to be a great welfare initiative by the Narendra Modi Government it took place successfully and really able to reach to the eligible/needy BPL families.
