Economical weaker section of Bhubaneswar city will soon get affordable houses in 10 housing projects. According to the information, Bhubaneswar Development Authority and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) will come up with 10 slum development projects in the city. These housing projects will have around 5,000 residential units for EWS (economical weaker section).
The official said that the task of constructing 5,000 EWS Houses in the city under various public-private partnership (PPP) has already been started and the new initiative will add 5,000 more houses for EWS. Total 10,000 houses will soon be ready for EWS category.
The urban development agencies are searching for proper lands for the development of these projects.
The agencies will construct these projects on unused land where slum people are not staying there, and slum land by relocating its dwellers. If the urban bodies fail to get unused land, it will develop the slum land with the cooperation of its residents.
Odisha State government has started a Policy for Housing for All in Urban Areas in 2015 to promote the affordable housing across the state. As per the policy, there are seven types of models to ensure more and more affordable houses in urban clusters across the state through seven types of PPP models. However, appropriate models will be considered for these 10 slum projects to ensure the poor a roof over their head.
Besides, an innovative PPCP model (Public Private Community Participation) will also be introduced for the fulfilling the dream of needy people of owning a shed. It is the first model introduced by the government to boost the affordable housing.
Senior Officer of BDA informed that in this model, the stake holders and community members in the slums will play an active role in ensuring the smooth progress and timely completion of the housing target.
City Mayor Anant Narayan Jena said that we have seen protest from the slum dwellers during eviction and relocation. But this time, we will include them in our project to expedite the process of relocation, rehabilitation and timely completion of the EWS housing units. A Slum Level Registered Societies will be created for the smooth implementation of the project.
This project is now in planning state. After selecting locations, we will move the file to general administration department for approval. After this, we will start our project with the cooperation of community people. It’s a part of our slum-free smart city mission. A step-by-step approach has also been codified under PPCP. This will involve faster and better slum community-led approach leading to timely delivery of the houses for the beneficiaries under the Housing for All Policy.
